The pain of being 75 lbs overweight

9 years ago, I stumble up to the porch of my house after a 2.7 mile walk to a park in my hometown and back. I’m dying. Huffing. Puffing. So out of shape that I can barely handle a 2.7 mile walk! Forget trying to survive a 5-k run!

But this was only one symptom of a problem that ran much deeper. Truth be told, I was FAT! What’s more, I was FAT, and a TEENAGER in high school! I was lucky enough to avoid being actively made fun of by my peers. But there were several things that continued to haunt me:

  • I never went to parties
  • I never went on a date
  • I wasn’t having sex like everyone else at 16
  • I wasn’t going to the beach (or in my case, the lake since I was living in Kansas) because I didn’t want to take off my shirt
  • I always wore extra layers of clothes to hide certain body features
  • I spent hours per day loathing myself in front of the mirror
  • I spent several additional hours per day fantasizing over images of my “ideal body”

In short, I spent an enormous amount of mental energy ruminating over my condition. Thoughts that continued to repeat themselves in my head included:

  • Who would want to be friends with someone like me?
  • No matter what I do, I can’t get the body I want, so I should just accept my place as the fat guy

But where am I now? Long story short, I have lost 75 lbs and am now no longer the fat guy. It’s 9 years later, and here are some of the things that happen now that would have never happened before:

  • I go to parties all the time
  • I go to the beach (or more commonly, to the river to float since I’m living in Texas now)
  • I wear normal clothes without the need to hide anything
  • I go out to the clubs and dance
  • I get attention from people physically attracted to me
  • I have sex

When I think back on the last 9 years of my life, I see that I have gone through a true transformation. It’s hard to look back on that person that I used to be, because he is so different from the person that I am now.

How do you get fit and look better nekkid?

First things first: what is the most important factor when it comes to weight loss and getting fit?

  • Some think it’s exercise - and that simply spending hours in the gym every day will get you where you want to go. This certainly helps, but…
  • Others think it’s nutrition - and this is closer to the right answer, with some experts saying that 80% of the success of any fitness plan is tied to the nutritional part. And this makes sense: the common saying for losing weight is “eat less, exercise more.” But you can only burn so many calories with exercise. The majority of the calorie deficit you create will need to come from how much you’re eating, and the MAKEUP of what you’re eating will help determine whether you’re losing fat or muscle. But all of this is still missing out on something, which is…
  • The Mindset and Overall Plan- and this comes in two parts:
    • Are you focusing on long-term nutrition, or short term wins?
    • Are you going about it in a way that will require infinite amounts of willpower to sustain, or are you doing it the SMART way which will make things almost a breeze?

Take a look a this last bullet point again, because this is where most people fail. The answer to these questions? You should focus on long-term nutrition by creating sustainable habits that will allow you to reach your goals without mustering up large amounts of willpower. That means:

  • No cabbage juice diets
  • No Atkins diet
  • No diet pills
  • No gimmicky products that can be purchased through television infomercials
  • >>>Only sustainable habits that will be EASY for you to adopt and SUSTAIN for the rest of your life

Why should you care about long-term health and nutrition?

About now you’re probably expecting to hear something like “you should focus on long-term health because if not you will get diabetes and cancer and then in 30 years you will die early because you ate too many cheeseburgers in your youth and clogged your arteries and you’re a bad-bad-person for not having the foresight to look out for your health in your golden years and if you don’t start eating healthy now you’re sure to… (snore)”

This may all be true, but my question is: who really cares? Right now I’m in my 20′s, and while I would rather not die an early death, it’s not something that has any sort of influence over the choices I’m going to make today. My mind just doesn’t work that way. It’s too far away for me to think about. More likely, I will be thinking about whether or not I’m going to be able to find a hot person to hook up with in the short term. F%$@ diabetes!

Unfortunately, weight loss experts continue to spew off the same nonsense about why you should focus on long-term health. No wonder America is so fat. The “experts” aren’t presenting info in a way that real people will actually listen.

But maybe you will listen to this:

Enter Ryan Benson, winner of Season 1 of the U.S. hit reality TV show The Biggest Loser, where morbidly obese people compete to see who can lose the most weight. And Ryan was very successful! In 10 weeks, he lost 122 pounds, going from 330 to 208:

Congratulations Ryan! Those are amazing results. You are an example of what real people can do when they put their minds to it and focus on long term health and… wait, what’s this?

A short 2.5 years after winning this show, he was back up to ~300 pounds. WHAT?!? How is this possible, after he received training from some of the best personal trainers in the world. Maybe if we look at how he lost the weight, we’ll see why he wasn’t successful in the end.

First, it helps to know a little bit about how the show is structured. Essentially, the show’s contestants are locked up on a ranch, separated from reality, so that they can focus just on losing weight for the duration of the show’s filming. That means that they don’t have to worry about jobs, family, or anything that happens in “real life.”  They can dedicate all of their waking time to doing hours of exercise per day, and having their food tailored to their specific needs. In other words, this isn’t reality. The show’s producers should go to jail for calling this “reality TV.”

On a more extreme note, read what Mr. Benson says about what he did to lose those final stubborn pounds in the days leading up to the show’s finale and final weigh-in (emphasis added):

I wanted to win so bad that the last ten days before the final weigh-in I didn’t eat one piece of solid food! If you’ve heard of “The Master Cleanse” that’s what I did. Its basically drinking lemonade made with water, fresh squeezed lemon juice, pure maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. The rules of the show said we couldn’t use any weight-loss drugs, well I didn’t take any drugs, I just starved myself! Twenty-four hours before the final weigh-in I stopped putting ANYTHING in my body, liquid or solid, then I started using some old high school wrestling tricks. I wore a rubber suit while jogging on the treadmill, and then spent a lot of time in the steam room. In the final 24 hours I probably dropped 10-13 lbs in just pure water weight. By the time of the final weigh-in I was peeing blood.

Was this healthy? Heck no! My wife wanted to kill me if I didn’t do it to myself first. But I was in a different place, I knew winning the show could put us in a better place financially and I was willing to do some crazy stuff. All this torture I put myself through has had no lasting effects on me (that I know of) and at the time it was sort of a fun adventure for me – but I am sure it reeked havoc on my system.

In the five days after the show was over I gained about 32 lbs. Not from eating, just from getting my system back to normal (mostly re-hydrating myself). So in five days I was back up to 240 – crazy!

WTF? Peeing blood? No wonder he got fat again. When the cameras get turned off and America is no longer watching your every move, it’s no wonder he started stuffing the cheeseburgers into his mouth again at midnight behind the backs of his wife and kids. In the words of Ryan himself:

“No one sees me get an apple pie in the drive-through.”

So if you haven’t figured it out by now, the real reason for the focus on long-term nutrition and health is so that you can actually retain whatever gains you’ve made. What’s the point of losing 100+ pounds in a year if you’re going to just gain it all back within another year?

Ryan is an extreme example of what happens when you focus on just quick wins, but this phenomena extends past The Biggest Loser. According to the National Weight Control Registry, only a fifth of the people who lose more than 10% of their body weight manage to keep it off for a year or more. Yikes! That means that a whopping 80% of people gain their weight back!
